How accurate is the attractiveness test?

The test is built to rate faces the way a large group of people would, and to give the same photo the same score every time. The checks below show what that looks like on real photos. It is still a score for one photo, not a fixed truth about you: light, angle and expression move it, just as they change how people see you.

Different faces, clearly different scores

Four faces photographed the same way land in four different bands. The test uses the whole scale instead of giving everyone a flattering 9, and the same photo gets the same score every time you run it.

Skin tone doesn't move the score

The same face, made lighter or darker, lands within a point of the original. Skin is never measured, so it can't add or take away points.

What a photo can't tell you

In person. How you move, sound and laugh, and how you come across face to face.

Taste. Your style, your energy and who finds you attractive vary from person to person.

Age. Most people whose ratings the AI learned from were young adults, so older faces tend to score a little lower.

Your worth. It measures how one photo reads, nothing more.

What else we checked

Same photo, same score. Run a photo again and you get the same number. Ask a chatbot three times and you often get three answers.

Men and women. Both get the same scale and the same kind words. You are never asked your gender.

Filters. Heavy skin smoothing moves the score only slightly.

Head angle. Turned photos can read a few points higher, so the test tells you when your head is turned.

Highlights. "Than most" compares you with a broad mix of people, with every background, men and women counted equally. Not every face gets a "than most" highlight, and a balanced one is just as good.

Can ChatGPT rate my face instead?

What is a good attractiveness score?

On this attractiveness scale, 80 is the middle. Your photo is compared with a large set of portraits that people rated: half of them score 80 or higher, and nothing scores below 60. A score in the 80s is above the middle, and 90 or more is in the top quarter.

Out of 10? Divide by ten: 84 is 8.4. "Top 37%" means the photo scored higher than 63% of the portraits it is compared with. It only shows for photos in the upper half.

Why does the scale start at 60?

Most attractiveness scales run from 1 to 10 and can hand out a 2. A photo is not a verdict on a person, so this one has no failing grade. The lowest band, Natural Charm, still describes a face people find pleasant. Everyday selfies spread widely, from the low 60s to the high 80s. The middle is around 80.

What does "Top X%" mean?

It tells you where your photo sits among the rated portraits. Top 20% means it scored higher than 80% of them. It only appears for photos above the middle, so it is always good news.

How are your highlights chosen?

Your browser measures a few proportions of your face, such as eye size, jaw width and the length of your lower face. Each one is compared with a broad mix of people, with every background, men and women counted equally, and the three that stand out most become your highlights. They only ever name what works on your face.

Every sentence is true for your measurements. A strong highlight says "than most". A middle one says your features sit in the typical range, which is also where most attractive faces sit.

Readings describe your face. They are not scored, there is no right answer, and they do not add up to your score. If your head is turned or tilted up or down, a reading may say "Not measured" instead of guessing.

Compared with everyone

"Than most" means most people across every background, men and women counted equally. Not every face gets a "than most" highlight. When yours are balanced, that is where most attractive faces sit.

Skin is left out

Skin changes most with light, filters and makeup, and it is where unfair bias creeps in, so the highlights never mention it.

No flaws, no fixes

You won't see weaknesses, a "potential" score or a list of things to change. Nothing is drawn on your photo.

How do I get an accurate result?

For the most accurate attractiveness test result, use a clear photo that faces the camera, in soft light from the front, taken at eye level from about an arm's length away. The test scores the photo, not the person, so angle, distance, expression and light all change the result. Three photos of you usually get three different scores.

For a steadier score

Face the camera with your head level. Photos turned well to the side can read a few points higher, and the test tells you when that happens.

Use the back camera or a timer if you can. Front cameras held close widen the nose and shrink the ears.

Stand near a window or in shade, with the light in front of you.

Hold the camera at eye level, about an arm's length away.

Relax your expression. A small natural smile is fine.

Skip heavy filters and sunglasses, and pull hair back from your eyes and brows so they can be measured.

Which photo of me is best?

Run the face attractiveness test on a few photos in a row. It keeps each score side by side for as long as the tab is open, so you can see which photo reads best, for a dating profile, a new avatar or a CV photo. Nothing is saved, and the list disappears when you close the tab.

What makes a face attractive?

People agree about faces more than the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" suggests. Studies across many countries find that raters tend to rank the same faces in a similar order. A few patterns show up again and again, and none of them is about a single "perfect" feature.

Close to average

Faces whose proportions sit near the average of a population are rated well. Blending many faces together tends to produce an attractive face, which is why "typical" is not a polite word for plain.

Symmetry matters less than you think

It is the famous one, but in real photos the effect is small. Most of the asymmetry a camera sees comes from head angle and lighting, not the face itself.

Expression and light

A relaxed expression and soft, even light make a face read as warmer and more attractive. That is why the same person gets different scores in different photos.

Taste still varies

Agreement is strong on average, but every person has their own type. A score predicts a crowd, not the one person who matters to you.

Not the golden ratio

The golden ratio is popular online, but studies have not found that faces matching it are rated more attractive. This test does not use it.

More than a photo

In person, people respond to how you move, sound and laugh. A still photo captures only part of that.

Divide your score by ten. An 84 is an 8.4. The middle of the portraits your photo is compared with is 80, so an 8 out of 10 is right in the middle.

What is the average attractiveness score?

Why can't I get a score below 60?

Why do I look different in the mirror than in photos?

A mirror shows you flipped and in motion, and you are used to that view. A camera shows the other side, often closer and with a wider lens, which changes proportions.

Does symmetry matter?

A little, less than most people think. Most of the asymmetry a camera sees comes from head angle and lighting, not the face itself. This test does not give a separate symmetry score.

Can I use it to choose a dating profile photo?
